Andri Angrino Volunteers to Revive Brook Glenn Elementary's Garden

2014 Jul 17

Andri Angrino of Taylors helped make a few changes at Brook Glenn Elementary School in Taylors this year.

Angrino, a senior at the University of South Carolina Upstate's Greenville campus, along with a classmate, discovered the school's dilapidated garden during their Clinical I pre-service teaching experience. Understanding the benefits of school gardens, the pair approached the school's principal, Bernice Jackson, and talked to her about reviving the garden. Jackson was passionate about saving the garden and worked closely with the students to design, implement and build the school's new garden.

With the help of Brook Glenn students, teachers and staff, the school now has three raised garden beds, a cucumber patch and supporting trellis.

The garden will serve as an outdoor classroom, engaging students with active learning and incorporating school pride. It also will provide students with hands-on, experiential learning opportunities in a wide array of disciplines, including the natural and social sciences, math, language arts and nutrition. A composting program has now been integrated into the curriculum.
